Vijayakanth, also known as ‘Puratchi Kalaignar’ and ‘Captain’ to his fans, faced many challenges before becoming famous in the Tamil film industry. Born as Vijayaraj in Madurai, Tamilnadu, on August 25, his parents were Azhagarsamy and Andal. Sadly, his mother Andal passed away when he was just one year old. With three more siblings, his father later married Rukmani, and together they had seven children, forming a happy joint family.Actor Politician Vijayakanth Founder of DMDK Takes His Final Bow in Chennai Honored with State Funeral

Vijayakanth attended various schools, completing his education up to the 11th standard at St. Mary’s school. Despite being involved in his father’s rice-mill business during this time, he couldn’t continue his studies beyond the 11th standard. One of his close friends, A.Se. Ibrahim Rawther, remains a strong companion and is now a prominent film producer.

Vijayakanth’s journey into the film industry began when Marsook, the proprietor-distributor of Sena’s Films, noticed him. Initially dropped from his first film due to concerns about his Tamil dialogue delivery, Vijayakanth didn’t give up. Driven by passion, he sought opportunities from various film companies, eventually landing a role in “Inikkum Ilamai.” Though his initial films like “Thooraththu Idi Muzhakkam,” “Neerottam,” and “Agal Vilakku” didn’t achieve great success, Vijayakanth persisted.

Chidambaram of ‘Vadaloor Combines’ saw potential in Vijayakanth after watching “Neerottam” and decided to produce “Sattam Oru Iruttarai.” Despite opposition, the film turned out to be a grand success, leading to Vijayakanth’s booking in 18 new films. Facing a downturn in his cinema market, the film “Saatchi” marked a turning point, becoming another success in his career.

Vijayakanth, who adheres to the words “Veezhvathu Naamaaga Irunthaalum Vazhvathu Thamizhaaga Irukkattum,” emphasizes Tamil pride in all his public addresses. His recent release, “Ulavuththurai,” is his 125th film, making him the only Tamil actor to achieve this feat without acting in any other language films. Notably, he has introduced new talents to the film industry, including directors and heroines, contributing to the success of Tamil cinema.
